Bob and Lucy lived and farmed in the northern metro area of the Twin Cities. In 1978, the couple decided to start their own farming business in Otter Tail County. The farm started with 240 acres and a 400-sow farrow-to-finish operation. Over time, the farm has grown to over 800 acres of crop production and breeding stock that has been sold all over the United States and Japan.
The current operation includes Bob and Lucy’s two sons, who help with crops and raising pigs. For the past 20 years, the Robertses have been selling a portion of their pork production through a retail store in Battle Lake. The store also sells locally grown beef, lamb, chicken and eggs provided by the Robertses’ granddaughter. The Roberts have three part-time employees on the farm and six part-time employees in their store.
The Roberts’ son Eric is the farm’s feed production manager. Eric develops, mixes and grinds five different rations for each age group of animals. Bob and Lucy’s son Brian is the crop production manager and maintains the irrigation equipment. Eric and his wife, Tamara, have a daughter, Hermione, who raises chickens and eggs. Brian and his wife, Jenny, have a son, Mason, who helps with harvest.
Bob and Lucy have been members of the St. Paul Growers Association for over 20 years. They sell their pork at the St. Paul Farmers Market. The family is very active in their church where Bob has served as treasurer and Lucy is a member of the church council. Eric is an Amor Township supervisor.
