Jim and Ron Holty Families
Jim and Ron’s father, Richard, moved to the farm in southeastern Minnesota in 1939. Richard raised beef cow/calf pairs, finished beef cattle and hogs. He also grew corn, oats and alfalfa on a 450-acre farm. Today, Jim and Ron Holty, along with their families, run several operations on both sides of the city of Spring Grove.
The Holtys custom raise 1,000 head of dairy heifers and finish 2,500 head of dairy steers annually, and they have 100 beef cow/calf pairs. The Holtys’ farm is the host site for the Minnesota Beef Cattle Improvement Association bull test station.
The Holtys grow soybeans on 1,100 acres, and they raise 2,350 acres of corn and 250 acres of alfalfa. Ron manages the livestock part of the operation, Jim manages the cropping side and his wife Elaine helps with the bookwork. Jim and Elaine have two children, Natalie and Nick. Ron and his wife, Kimberly, have six children. Their daughter, Haley, has moved on to adventures off the farm. Their sons, Taylor and Carter, help around the farm when they are not in school, and the younger three, Danika, Evan and Savannah, help work the cattle. The families own a custom chopping, harvesting and planting business.
Jim and Ron are both very involved in Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Spring Grove. They’ve held various positions within the church including chairman and trustee. Ron is the church’s AWANA commander. Elaine and Kimberly teach Sunday school and help in a variety of other ways including helping with the community church picnic.
Ron is a founding member of the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association. The Holtys host the Minnesota 4-H beef weigh-in for the Houston County Fair.
The Holtys have held multiple meetings and educational farm tours in conjunction with local beef producers.
