Dean, Lois, Eric and Chassidy Klein

Wabasha County

In 1961, Donald and Delaine Klein purchased the 280 acre farm. They started milking 30 Holstein cows. The Kleins built a larger milking parlor in the 1980s when they were milking 70 cows. At that time the Kleins sold their farm to their son, Dean, and his wife, Lois.

In 2012, Klein’s Cow Palace LLC was formed to transition Dean and Lois’s son, Eric, into the farm as the third generation of the family to own the farm.  Eric was married in 2014 and his wife Chassidy joined the operation. Eric and Chassidy have a daughter, Hailey. Donald and Delaine Klein have three daughters: Jamie and her husband, Phil Schroeder, and their children, Sadie, Levi and Braxton; Melissa and her husband, John Eron, and their children, Jack and Nora; and the Kleins’ third daughter is Nicole.

The Kleins currently milk 500 cows. The family raises its own replacement heifers and finishes all its steers. The family farms 1,600 acres of corn, soybeans, alfalfa, small grains, sweet corn and peas. The family farm was named a Five Star Dairy by the Minnesota Milk Producers Association.

Dean serves on the board of directors of Plainview Milk Products Cooperative. Dean and Lois served on the Wabasha County ADA board for several years. They are past 4-H club leaders. Eric was recently elected to the Wabasha County Extension Committee and he is a member of a dairy peer group. The family has hosted dairy day camps, family night on the farm and numerous other tours, including tours for care center residents.
