Dave and Stacy Mente and Sons
David and Stacy were married in September, 1997. Months later, they were approached by Lawrence and Mildred Heikes about purchasing their farm place. The Mentes started by renting the Heikes’ land and then bought it in 1999. The farm included 40 acres of pasture and 110 acres of crop land. The Mentes purchased about 20 cow/calf pairs and crop farmed the land.
In 2005, Dave and Stacy began working with the local NRCS office and turned their 110 acres of cropland into a rotational grazing system, a process that took place over a decade.
The family now runs 70 cow/calf pairs and 30 replacement heifers. They stockpile some grass for winter feed. The Mentes also rent properties in neighboring communities where they run about 110 cows and 30 replacement heifers. The Mentes utilize an extensive AI and embryo transfer program.
Three years ago the Mentes purchased Dave’s family farm in eastern Iowa, which the family has custom farmed.
Dave and Stacy have three boys, Dylan, Trevor and Justin. The boys help out in all aspects of running the farm. The Mentes were honored as Conservationists of the Year in Nobles County and received the 4-H Alumni Award last year in Rock County for their work supporting local 4-H youth.
