Dave and Ann Buck bought their dairy in 1991 after farming with Dave’s family for 15 years. The Bucks started with 90 cows and 240 acres of crops. They have since grown their herd to 500 cows and 950 acres of owned and rented land. Four years ago, Dave and Ann started the process of transitioning the farm to their son, Chris, who is now a partner.
The Buck dairy consists of 500 crossbred dairy cows and the family raises all their own heifers. They feed out about 200 steers a year. The Bucks raise corn, hay and oats for forage. Dave and Ann also operate a dairy near Lonsdale in Rice County with their sons.
Dave handles the bookkeeping and fills in wherever needed. Ann takes care of the calf raising and ordering. Chris handles the feeding and helps make day-to-day decisions. The Bucks’ son D.J. operates a manure-pumping business and a forage harvesting business. Another son, Brian, is a field agronomist with Pioneer and helps with cropping.
Dave serves as president of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association and vice president of Hastings Co-op Creamery. Ann has been a member of the Goodhue School Board for 10 years and is very involved in other community activities. The Bucks have hosted Breakfast on the Farm events and are strong supporters of dairy promotion activities.
