Martie Family Farm
Russ and Sharon purchased land from Sharon’s brother in 1972 and over the years they expanded their operation to 250 owned acres. They admit they had a lot to learn in the early years of farming when they raised hogs, sold feed and crop farmed. In 1982, the Marties started Marties Farm Service in Elk River, eventually adding stores in Monticello and St. Francis. And they continued to farm.
Currently the Martie family raises corn and hay on about 400 acres. They use no-till, plant cover crops and trees and just recently added bee hives to the farm. The operation also includes beef cows, feeder steers, donkeys, some hogs and retired horses. Russ is also involved in sub-surface irrigation that involves about 53 acres and he produces his own bio-diesel.
The Marties were named “Outstanding Conservationists for 2015” by the Wright County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The Martie Farm stores are a family operation. Russ and Sharon’s children are all involved. Their son, Rusty and his wife, Beth, manage the Elk River Store. Son Paul and his wife, Jodi, manage the St. Francis store, daughter, Barb and her husband Brion, manage the store in Monticello. Also involved in the farm and the stores are Trevor, Jason and John Martie.
