Olson Family Farm
Jim’s parents, James and Ellen Olson, purchased the farm in 1954 and raised dairy cattle, hogs and crops. Jim and Beth were married in 1981 and farmed in partnership with his parents. Jim and Beth purchased the farm in 1992 and bought out the remaining partnership in 1996.
The farm is called Olson-Lane Holsteins. The Olsons milk 75 registered Holsteins and Jersey cows and raise and care for young stock. The family also farms about 400 acres south of Utica in Winona County.
Jim and Beth have farmed side-by-side for 35 years–they hire no outside help. Both of their children graduated from the University of Minnesota with dairy science degrees. The Olsons’ daughter, Katie, is the farm’s herd manager. Son Trent works for ABS Global and helps out on the farm part-time. Trent’s wife, Kristin, works for the World Dairy Expo.
The Olson family has been very involved in 4-H and FFA over the years. Jim is a past board member of the Elba Co-op Creamery and the Winona County Holstein Club. Beth is a past director of the Rochester Area Holstein Club and Katie is currently serving on the board as treasurer. Beth is a director of the Tri-County Electric Cooperative, serves on the Winona County Farm Service Committee and the State Dairy Princess Committee. She was Princess Kay of the Milky Way in 1977. The family is involved in St. Paul’s Church in Lewiston and the farm was recognized in 2006 as the Conservation Farm of the Year in Winona County.
