Nelson Family Farm
Joel is the third generation of the Nelson family to farm the land near Lyle in southeastern Minnesota’s Mower County. Joel’s father, Roger, passed the farm on to Joel when Roger retired. Joel, along with his wife, Carrie, have three children and the parents hope a fourth generation of the family will run the farm in the years ahead.
The Nelson’s raise corn and soybeans on about 1,000 acres of owned and rented land. Joel also does some custom farming work in the area.
Joel has been active in the Mower County Corn and Soybean Growers Association–having served as the chair of the organization. He’s also a board member of the Lyle School Board and serves on the church council at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle. Joel is a past volunteer for the Lyle Fire Department.
Carrie was school secretary for 20 years and volunteers for many school activities. She also volunteers for the local cancer telethon fundraiser and she’s the farm’s bookkeeper.
The Nelson’s children, Lucy, Jed and Mac, are all involved in sports–finding time to participate in baseball, basketball and volleyball.
