Smart Family Farm
In 1903, Duane’s grandfather, Wallace, purchased the 160 acre farm in central Minnesota’s Crow Wing County. A barn was built on the acreage 13 years later and Duane’s father, Leonard, updated the barn in 1960 by adding block and metal siding. Leonard farmed the land until 1971, when Duane returned from Viet Nam. At that time Duane and Virginia purchased the farm.
The Smarts milked 46 cows for twenty years with help from their daughters and a good friend. The family sold the cows in 2000 when Duane’s health started to decline and then began raise beef animals with the help of their sons-in-law.
The Smart’s farm, near Brainerd, raises corn, small grains and hay.
