David Vanderzee’s parents purchased the farm’s original 120 acres in 1932. Fourteen years later they purchased 80 additional acres and built all new buildings. Then, in 1955, David started farming with his parents. Four years later David and Kay were married. Over time the farm was expanded to include the current Holstein dairy herd along with corn, alfalfa and oats.
Many members of the Vanderzee family are involved with the farm including children and grandchildren. Their six children are: Linda, Dawn, Randy, Kathie, David Paul and Sarah. The Vanderzee’s son Randy purchased the farm in 1999 and David and Kay moved across the road.
David was very involved in his local community over the years. He was a member of the Ridgeway Fire Department, the Minnesota Horse Pullers Association, Ridgeway Creamery Board and the board of Swiss Valley Farms. Kay has been involved with Pleasant Bees 4-H Club, Red Hat Society, Ridgette’s Home Study Group, Ridgeway Community School activities and Kay says she loves to sew dresses. The Vanderzees are active members of Ridgeway Methodist Church.
