The Swanson Farm, located near Nowthen, MN has been in the Swanson family since 1942. The farm was originally farmed by Leon’s grandmother. Leon’s father operated the land until 1973, which is when Leon purchased it from him. Leon and his wife Anita live on the 68 acre farmstead. Over the years, they have farmed up to 700 acres in the area. Leon and Anita have grown corn, soybeans, and hay. They have also raised pigs, cattle, and horses. Today the couple focuses on raising cattle and selling hay locally. For fun, they also house a few horses. Leon and Anita have three daughters; Kelly, Renee, and Lynn.
In the community, Leon has been a member of the Anoka County Fair Board and active in the St. Francis alumni. He was inducted into the St. Francis High School Hall of Fame in 2010. Anita, is an active St. Francis alumni member, and has been involved with the Extension 4-H Management Committee, 4-H Large Livestock Committee, and Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics Program. She was also a 4-H leader when her daughters were in 4-H. In addition, Anita and her three daughters enjoy volunteering at the 4-H food stand at the Anoka County Fair.
