Borgerding Family

Stearns County

The Borgerdings have been farming in Stearns County since 1870.  In 1976, Joe, the 10th of 12 children, assumed management of the farm from his dad.  Joe married Toni in 1979. In 1996, biological farming principles were introduced to improve the health of the soil and livestock on the farm.  After seeing desirable results, the farm was able to achieve organic certification and began selling milk to Organic Valley in 2004.  Today the farm includes 680 owned and 220 rented acres.  There are 170 cows, heifers, and some dairy beef.  Over the years 25-30 nieces & nephews have worked on the “family” farm.  Today four of Joe & Toni’s children work on the farm.  Teri works with foster children and also helps on the farm.  Danny & Tommy manage the dairy herd.  Danny and his wife, Colleen, have two children.  Danny is also the welder for the farm, and Tommy is the pasture manager.  When Tyler, 16 yrs old, is not involved with school activities, he helps with chores and drives tractor.  Ryan, the oldest son, is in Texas working as an engineer for the oil industry.

The Borgerdings are also involved in the community.  Danny, Colleen, & Tommy are all involved with the church youth group.  Danny also coaches wrestling.  Toni teaches religion classes.  Joe has been involved with the local watershed board, is on the parish council, and, MN Milk Producers Association.
