Donny and Holly Thompson

Olmsted County
2013

The Thompson Family Farm in Plainview, MN is a century farm that was recognized in 1976 under Dale and Monica Thompson, Donny’s parents.  Donny is now the 4th generation to farm the family farm.  Over the years, many updates have been made. In 2006, a new dairy facility with free stalls and a parlor was built on the farm, housing nearly 200 head of registered and grade Holsteins.  In addition, Donny and Holly added a Delaval calf feeder that feeds calves one week old until they are weaned. The Thompson’s have also installed daily milk weights and activity monitoring for all cows.  The machines are large, up-front expenses but they have helped reduce their reliance on hired help.  In addition to the cows, the Thompsons farm over 700 acres and have many more acres in pasture, woods, and waterways.  Donny and Holly have three children, Nick, Katie, and Clara.  All three children help out on the farm.

Nick, Katie, and Clara are very involved with 4-H, FFA, sports, and dairy activities, so Donny and Holly’s community involvement often revolves around those activities.  In addition, Holly is a 4-H leader, superintendent for the fair, and the SE district director on the MN DHIA board.
