In 1941, Doug’s grandfather bought the family farm in Glencoe. On the farm, he raised pigs and chickens and milked 10-12 head of dairy. In 1949 he bought his first tractors and made the transition from farming with horses to tractors. Doug’s father Bill purchased the farm in 1976 and milked 23 Holsteins until he sold them in 1997. At that time, he purchased his first four head of commercial beef cows. Doug purchased the farm from his father in 2005. Today the Dahlkes raise corn, oats, soybeans, and hay. They also have 18 head of commercial beef in a cow/calf operation. Doug works off the farm at Arnolds Implement as a mechanic and Patty as a veterinarian at Glencoe Veterinary Clinic. Doug and Patty have two children, Samantha and Matthew, who both help on the farm. Doug’s brothers Dan and Dean also help with the haying season and his father Bill acts as farm advisor.
The Dahlkes are members of First Lutheran Church and St. Pius Church. The family is also active in 4-H as members and adult leaders. Sam is a 4-H officer at the club and county levels. Matt and Sam are also FFA members and Doug and Patty are FFA alumni members. The family helps with fundraising and supporting the local FFA chapter where Sam is an officer.
