Oliver and Gertie Juntunen
Edwin Juntunen moved from Finland in 1910 and worked in the copper fields in Michigan. He bought the family farm in Itasca County in 1916 and began farming in 1917. Edwin and his wife Minnie had three girls and one boy (Oliver). Son Oliver and his wife Gertrude purchased the family farm in 1957. Oliver and Gertie kept up the farm while raising four girls (Valerie, Carol, Arlene, and Jennifer) and one boy (Dale). In 1988, Oliver and Dale switched the dairy herd to beef. In 1998, Dale and his wife Kari purchased the farm. Dale, Oliver, Gertrude, and Dale’s two children continue to operate a 35 head beef farm while growing approximately 300 acres of hay.
The entire family has been involved in the Suomi Lutheran Church with Edwin and Minnie being charter members. Oliver was active with the Deer River Coop, the Itasca Mutual Insurance Company, and the Itasca County Agricultural Stabilization Committee. Gertie was a 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher. Dale has been active in the Northern Star Coop, the Itasca Mutual Insurance Company. He also owns a school bus and hires a driver bus for Deer River School District and owns a construction business.
