John Jr. and Shelly Gilbertson
At birth, John Gilbertson had farming in his blood. Both his father and grandfather were avid farmers. At the age of 12, John bought his very first dairy cows. After graduating from the U of M Crookston, John bought his grandfather’s 300 -acre farm. Working side by side, John and his father John Sr. helped each other to expand their herds and to do the chores on their farms. After they sold their dairy in 1995, John and his father turned to beef farming. Over the years, John and his wife Shelly have sold part of John’s grandfather’s land, but have kept the original homestead. In 1998, John and Shelly moved to their current location where John has taught his three children, Christopher, Josh, and Chelsey the lessons of farming. Today the Gilbertsons have beef heifers, swine, chickens, horses, and a rabbit. On top of their own herd, the Gilbertson family winters 50 horses for an Outfitting business from Colorado.
John is currently a chair of the Beltrami County Extension Committee, Vice President for Farm Bureau, and a Beltrami County Fair Board Member. Together John and Shelly have been volunteers for Beltrami 4-H where all three of their children are involved. John and Shelly also started J&S Feeds in 2010, which helps small farms and kids involved in 4-H because they keep their prices affordable.
