Gary and Lori Swanson
The Swanson family farm in Afton, MN has been in operation at the present location since 1942. The farm was originally a dairy until 1969, but was converted to a feeder cattle and hog operation when Gary took over in 1976. Today Gary is operating an approximately 1300 acre corn and soybean farm along with feeder cattle. The Swansons use GPS yield monitoring and mapping, grid soil sampling for fertilizing, and lime applications. Gary’s wife Lori contributes to the family business by keeping computerized records. She also works off the farm as a licensed dental assistant. Gary and Lori’s son Travis works full time as an electrician, but does help with the planting and harvesting in addition to operating some of his own acreage. Travis and his wife Rachel have a daughter, Isabelle who is the fifth generation to live on the farm. Gary and Lori also have a daughter Lindsey who is an Occupational Therapist and will be married July 2012, with the reception being held at the farm.
Gary and Lori are both involved at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Afton. They were active in 4-H when their children participated. Gary has served on Afton City Council for 6 years and is presently on the board of Dakota/ Washington FSA County Committee.
