Will and Kathy Almendinger

Anoka County

Will’s interest in trees began in the early sixties when he cut and sold Christmas trees to help defray college expenses.  In 1966, Will graduated from the U of M with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.  He went to work full time as an engineer with International Multifoods, but continued working the Christmas-tree business part time.  In 1974, Will and his brother Russ, and brother-in-law Chuck Edling bought a 320 acre Christmas-tree farm and began growing their own trees.  Additional farms consisting of 230 acres in Oak Grove, and 140 acres near Northfield were added.  In 1996 and 2004, the partners retired and Will continued the operation. Currently, Rum River Tree Farm operates 8 tree farms.  They have 20 retail lots and 2 cut-your-own farms.  The tree farm is a popular place for tours for various community groups.  Rum River Tree Farm is a family affair with Will’s wife, son, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren helping with various aspects of the business.  He of course, cannot begin to thank the many dear and valued employees that make the farm successful.  During peak seasons, the farms employ over 60 employees.

In the community, Will is in the MN Christmas Tree Growers Association, as well a regular exhibitor at the MN State Fair, and a member of the International Order of Elks.
