Dennis and Sonja Coleman

Watonwan County

In the spring of 1967, with the help of his parents, Dennis purchased a 160 acre farm in South Branch Township.  A year later, Dennis and Sonja were married and they had their first full year of farming.  They started out with 10 gilts to begin a hog operation.  Today the Coleman’s operate a 1,200 sow farrow to finish hog operation, which is mostly located on the original 160 acres.  In addition to the hog operation, the Coleman’s run 2,700 acres of soybeans and corn.  Dennis and Sonja have three children, Brent, Nikki, and Tami.  Children Brent and Nikki are both included in the hog operation as well as Nikki’s husband Dan.  The family works together, along with extra hired help, to perform the day to day responsibilities of the hog operation.  Dennis, Brent, and Dan play a key role of making the crop production a success.

In the community, the Coleman’s have been involved with 4-H as members and leaders, and now with grandchildren in 4-H.  They are also members of the Watonwan Co. Pork Producers, Corn and Soybean Associations, Farm Bureau, and Farm Business Management.  In the past, Dennis has been on the FHA Board and Watonwan Co. Fair Board.  Their church affiliations are East Sveadahl Lutheran and 1st Lutheran churches in St. James.
