Evergreen Farms; John and Soly Akkerman

Even though, John moved to the farm after his parents retired, John purchased his first farm in 1971 after returning home from service in the US Navy.  He began farming on a partnership with his dad, but manages his own farm now.  Today he runs about 800 acres of corn and beans.  He and Soly also farm “for fun” as they have 30 chickens for a local egg business, a raspberry patch, and giant pumpkins.  The couple also own shares in Alcorn, the farmer-owned ethanol plant in Claremont, and deliver corn four times per year.  John and Soly have 3 children:  Brian, Christine, and Ross.

John enjoys the outdoors as he deer hunts, deep sea fishes, and bow fishes.  He is also a member of the Minnesota State Archery Association and teaches wildlife sports and safety at area schools.  Soly is active with Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin.  When her children were at home, she was an active 4-H and FFA volunteer.
