Sorg Family Farm; William and Randy Sorg & Families

Sorg Family Farm in Hastings has some spectacular views of Spring Lake from the western Mississippi River Bluffs.  The William and Randy Sorg families milk 300 cows twice a day.  They raise their own calves and continue to improve their genetics without buying any cows or heifers.  The Sorg’s raise alfalfa, corn, beans, wheat, and barley.  They have cash grain to sell, but they also utilize their crop variety for their dairy herd as needed.  The Sorg’s also have made 2 acres of land available to University of Minnesota Extension as a test plot for a nitrogen study being conducted by Dakota County Extension Educator, Phyllis Bongard, and the University of Minnesota Department of Soil, Water and Climate.  William and Randy’s cooperation in this project will offer on-farm nitrogen management results in irrigated corn.

The Sorgs actively support local cooperatives.  They participate in Minnesota Valley Breeders for AI; their power is provided by Dakota Electric; they sell their milk to the Hastings Co-op Dairy; and they purchase farming inputs from the local farmer-owned cooperatives.  The Sorg’s feel that participation in the cooperative movement over the years has influenced the evolution of their agricultural operation.
