The Swenson farm of North Branch, Minnesota is a father/son operation that was founded when Jim was still in high school. When Jim’s father died, his mother Em kept the operation running with the help of the boys until Jim and his brother were old enough to partner. The brothers farmed together for many years until Jim and his sons later took over. Today, Swenson and Sons, operated by Jim and his sons Kurt and Karl, consists of a farrow-to-finish hog operation, a beef herd, and soybeans, rye and hay crops. Gwen also raises turkeys and chickens for butchering.

All of the Swenson family members are alumni of 4-H and FFA. Jim and Gwen are still very active with these organizations and outside of the farm along with other organizations such as Farm Bureau, Oak Leaf Grange and their church.
