John and Pat Ryan John and Pat Ryan’s century farm was homesteaded in 1889 by John J. Ryan. In 1963, John took over the farm from his father and uncle and today farms with his sons, Shawn and Thomas. The family grows corn and soybeans. They also have an 800 sow farrow to wean hog confinement operation. John and Pat live on the homestead and are actively involved in the day-to-day operation mainly in the marketing and financial management aspect. Shawn is in charge of the crops, machinery, and grain transportation. Thomas works as a crop consultant and supplies the operation with all seed, fertilizer, chemical and cropping recommendations. Aside from the farm, John is also a part time teacher at the Springfield Public School. He is an FFA American Farmer and an honorary member of the Springfield FFA Chapter where he is currently the coach of the FFA soils team.
